Good turnout reported for National Night Out 2019

Neighbors met neighbors and public safety officials at parties around the area for National Night Out on Tuesday.

The annual event is intended to build relationships in the hopes of deterring and solving crimes.

Lake City Police Officer Jeff Daggett, the department’s coordinator for events in Lake City, said the 13 block parties in the city were well-attended.

“Not too muggy,” he wrote in an email Wednesday morning.

Judy and Frank Siebenaler’s party on North Lakeshore Drive began at 5:30 p.m. and it didn’t take long before they had several tables full.

Judy said she used to attend parties all over the city as a member of the city’s Civil Service Commission, except in her own neighborhood.

“Nobody ever had one around here,” she said.

So when she left the commission in 2010, she and Frank started hosting a party.

This year was their 10th, and it’s become sort of a neighborhood institution. She said people start asking in March if they plan to host again.

Goodhue County Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Goham and his K-9 Valor were at the Florence Township National Night Out event at the Frontenac Community Center.

The county got Valor, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois, through former Minnesota Viking Brian Robison’s charity after Goham’s last K-9 was hit by a car.

Valor came from the Netherlands and, because of some early training received there, responds to some commands in Dutch.

It used to be more common for law enforcement dogs in the U.S. to come from Europe, according to Goham, but that’s changed as breeders have brought dogs to the U.S. and begun producing them domestically.

Daggett, the Lake City coordinator, said he “wanted to thank everyone who hosted or attended a block party and also police, fire, and ambulance personnel who visited the block parties.”
