For Medvec, the sky's the limitless frontier

Mitchel Medvec was on a basketball bus in eighth grade when he saw something that changed his life.

Bored, he scraped away the ice forming on the window. Outside he saw the sun ringed with rainbows.

The rings, known as sun halos, appear when light is refracted through ice crystals in the clouds at a 22 degree angle.

The sight fascinated him, and he’s been looking up ever since.

That spring there was an astronomy unit in his earth science class at Lincoln High School taught by Anna Karsten.
