Program benefits food shelf clients, restaurants

The Zumbro Valley Foundation, a local community foundation, has partnered with the food shelves in Mazeppa and Zumbro Falls to offer $25 gift cards from six area restaurants.

A total of $6,250 was raised from local residents, businesses and community groups with a matching grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation.

With the increased use of food shelves and loss of restaurant retail food sales due to COVID-19, the Zumbro Valley Foundation decided to make an attempt to address both problems at one time, the foundation said in a news release.

Gift cards being distributed through the Mazeppa and Zumbro Falls Area Food Shelves can be redeemed for take-out at the following participating restaurants: Leo’s Sports Bar, Zumbro Falls Golf Club, Delila’s Café, Buck Wild, The Local Pizzeria, and Mac’s Park Place.

Fred Liffrig, owner of Leo’s Sports Bar said he was “very thankful,” according to the foundation “At this time anything you can get is a great help,” he added.

Delilah Gingerich of Delila’s Café was pleased too and said she “appreciated it very much.”

Angie Hein, co-owner of Buck Wild was appreciative too and offered a quote from Kathy Calvin stating: “‘Giving is not just about a donation, it’s about making a difference.’”

“That is what the Zumbro Valley Foundation did for us and we are so thankful that we are part of a great community and have the support that we do,” she said.

Al Christenson, Chair of the Zumbro Valley Foundation, was pleased with the outcome of the fundraiser too and said, “One thing you can count on in the valley is that if there is a problem, the neighbors will come out to help fix it.”

The Zumbro Valley Foundation was created by a handful of citizens with the help of the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF). The foundation is comprised of board members from Mazeppa, Zumbro Falls, Hammond and South Troy.

Its mission is to support programs and projects that improve the quality of life and build a sustainable and stronger community. More information can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/pg/TheZumbroValleyFoundation.
