Gwendolyn Benson Obituary

Gwendolyn (Gwen) Ann (Fick) Benson, 70, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas after a brief and brave struggle with cancer.
Gwen was born in Red Wing on May 30, 1947, to Vernon and Genevieve Fick. She graduated high school in her hometown of Lake City and went on to graduate from Winona State University with a degree in early education. While attending college, Gwen met the love of her life, J.O. Benson. They were married Dec. 21, 1968 and shared 48 years together. During their marriage they had two daughters, Shannon and Cassie. After multiple moves early on they chose to make Mason City, Iowa their home for the past 34 years. Together, they enjoyed family time the most.
Gwen was a stay-at-home mom, a supportive wife, and earned great respect as a valued substitute teacher in Mason City. She was known by many students as “Mrs. B.”. Gwen enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time laughing with friends and family. For many years, J.O. and Gwen took advantage of their daughters living in the South as they became snowbirds for a few months to escape the Iowa winters. She loved the beach and the many adventures they took with their good friends, but mostly she loved adoring her grandkids and spoiling them with hugs.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, J.O. Benson and her brother, Burt Fick. She is survived by her two daughters, Shannon (Doug) Bartz of McKinney, Texas and Cassie (Nick) Haidin of San Antonio, Texas; her four grandchildren, Jared Bartz, Avery Bartz, Neva Haidin and Cali Haidin. She also leaves behind numerous relatives and loving, close friends.
As per her direct wishes, no formal service will be held. The family will hold a Celebration of Life in her honor at a later date.
