Helen Myers obituary
Helen Eileen Myers, 80, of rural Millville, Minnesota passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, with her family by her side. She was born on June 20, 1944, in Lake City, Minnesota to Julius and Elvira (Danckwart) Lichtblau. She was baptized on August 6, 1944, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lake City and confirmed her faith on May 18, 1958, at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Wabasha, Minnesota.
Helen grew up attending Rural Wabasha County School District #22 at the Wheelan School and graduated from Wabasha High School in 1962 as the Valedictorian. In 1962, she was crowned the Wabasha County Dairy Princess. She went on to attend the Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota graduating in 1965.
Helen married the love of her life, Fred Myers, on January 1, 1966, while living in Santa Ana, California. They lived in California until 1977 when they moved to Burnsville, Minnesota. In 1996 they moved to the West Albany area in Wabasha County.
Helen was heavily involved in her community. Over the years she involved in many activities, such as the Millville Historical Society, Wabasha County Historical Society, St. Patrick and Grace UCC Quilting Group, Red Wing Collectors Society, Millville Valley Legion Auxiliary Post #579, Plainview Elgin Area Food Shelf, TOPS, Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing Alumni Association, and was a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Millville. She also established the Fred Myers Geodimeter memorial Scholarship for land surveying students.
Helen loved managing her farm and woodland; she was a regular participant in the annual Wabasha Forestry Day and hosted field days at her farm to demonstrate land stewardship best practices. When she shared her conservation story, she would always say that she wasn’t just doing it for herself, but for those here and yet to come – and then follow it up with a laugh saying she planned to live to 102.
She was also active in the Prairie Smoke Non-Profit, Land Stewardship Project, and the Minnesota Forestry Association. She was named Woodland Manager of the Year in 2022 by the Wabasha Soil & Water Conservation District and received the 2022 Forest Steward Award from the Minnesota Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts and DNR Division of Forestry.
Helen also served her community on the Mayo Clinic Health System – Lake City Development Board, and the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Board. She was honored to serve as the Wabasha Riverboat Days Parade Grand Marshal in 2013.
Helen enjoyed traveling with her family including trips to Hawaii, Costa Rica, Mexico, Belize, Paris, and Las Vegas, as well as gardening, morel mushroom hunting, roller skating in the barn, and playing golf and getting a hole in one on Lake Pepin Golf Course in 2015.
Helen is survived by her children, Kim Myers (Mike Ohlhaber) of St. Paul, Minnesota and Kirk Myers of Auburn, Washington; four grandchildren, Will, Nicholas, Olivia, and Avery; three sisters, Beverly Kackmann and Delores Springer both of Lake City, and Kathryn (Curtis) Hermandson of Wabasha. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
The Celebration of Life Memorial service for Helen will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, at the Millville American Legion Post #579 with Pastor Ana Wilson officiating. Following the service will be the burial in the Millville Cemetery and a meal at the Millville American Legion. Friends and family may visit on Friday, August 1, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schleicher Funeral Homes, Lake City Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the Millville American Legion. Memorials are preferred.
