Maureen Wavrin Obituary

Maureen Wavrin passed away on Feb. 27, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus in Rochester from complications of Multiple Myeloma.
    She was born on Feb. 14, 1949 in Farmington, Minn. to Robert Grove and Emily (Sauber) McDermott. Maureen graduated from Marian High School in Owatonna in 1967. She went on to Mankato State University and completed a combined bachelor’s degree in political science and social studies. She married Dennis Wavrin in 1970 in Owatonna. After Dennis finished dental school, the couple settled in Le Sueur, Minn. Along with raising three children, she completed a degree in elementary education at Mankato State University. She subsequently taught for 23 years in the Le Sueur-Henderson School system, first at Hilltop (Henderson) and then at Park (Le Sueur). Maureen was an avid reader, enjoyed her book club and many other good friendships throughout her life. Sharing her knitting talent, Maureen began a tradition of knitting Christmas stockings for immediate and extended family. She also loved watching football, especially her Golden Gophers. After retirement, she moved with husband Dennis to Maple Grove, Minn., to be closer to her two grandchildren, Elliot and Emily, and enjoyed volunteering at their school, Rice Lake Elementary.
    Maureen is survived by her husband, Dr. Dennis; daughters, Katie (Col. Christopher) Robertson of Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. and Kelly (Nate Moore) Wavrin of Minneapolis; son, Christopher (Shelly) Wavrin and children Elliot and Emily of Maple Grove; siblings, John (Mary) McDermott of Owatonna, Bob (Kim) McDermott of Kasson, Monica (Gary) Lurken of Vermillion, S.D., David (Barb) McDermott of The Villages, Fla., Margie (Tom) Harkins of Lake City, Michelle, (Bob) Lynch of Lake City and Mark (Lola) McDermott of Owatonna; and numerous nieces and nephews.
