Richard Herbst obituary

Richard “Dick” Leo Herbst, 84, of Lake City, Minnesota passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025, at Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester, Saint Marys Campus with his family by his side. He was born on March 9, 1941, in Lake City to August and Marie (Krause) Herbst. Dick attended Wabasha County Rural Schools to begin his education and then attended Wabasha High School. On June 13, 1964, he married Julian “Judy” Evers at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha.
Dick farmed until 1988 when he started his welding business. He enjoyed spending time golfing and had two hole-in-ones and hosted the One Arm Golfing Tournament for 20 years. He also sponsored Dick’s Dream Softball Team for many years in Lake City.
Dick was a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake City, the Lake City Lion’s Club and the Drift Skippers Snowmobile Club.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 60+ years, Judy Herbst of Lake City; children, Sandy Kay (John) Wieck of Lake City, Paul Richard Herbst of Osceola, Wis., Shari Lynn (Randy) Thomas of Madelia, and Thomas Richard (Colleen) Herbst of Wabasha; 11 grandchildren, Taylor, Emily, Samantha, Anthony, Laura, Dillan, Dustin, Austin, Alissa, Levi, and Teagan; 12 great-grandchildren, Paige, Kadence, Luke, Emmitt, Carina, Sawyer, Charlie, Sullivan, Bristol, Cora, Layton, and Weston; two sisters, Joanne Polyard of Texas, and Mary (Elmer) Evers of Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Donald, and one sister of Carol Skog.
The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 2, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church – West Albany in rural Millville, with Father Thé Hoang officiating. The burial will follow the service in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Lake City. Friends and family may visit from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 1 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and one hour prior to the service on Friday. A Celebration of Life for Dick will be held at the Lake Pepin Golf Course in rural Lake City following the burial.
