Vernon Kohn Obituary

Vernon Otto Kohn, 97, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at the Red Wing Health Center.  
    He was born Feb.  23, 1920, in Hay Creek Township to John and Dorthea (Langhans) Kohn.  He attended school in Hay Creek and helped on the family farm.  On June 6, 1944, he married Dorothy Barghusen at Lincoln Trinity Lutheran Church in Oak Center.  They farmed in Zumbro Falls for several years.  In 1959, they bought a farm in Vasa Township.  They farmed there until 1990, when they moved to Red Wing. Dorothy died on April 3, 2012.  He was a member of Vasa Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He served on many boards, including the Vasa Township Board, the Midland Co-op Board and the ASCS Board. He also once ran for Goodhue County commissioner. He was an avid 500 player and he belonged to numerous card clubs. Vernon enjoyed fishing, traveling with Dorothy and going to the cabin in Amery, Wis.
    Vernon is survived by five sons, Ken (Kathy) Kohn of Apple Valley, Dennis (Patti) Kohn of Hastings, Bruce (Mary) Kohn of St. Charles, and Jerry (Rosie) Kohn and Rich (Joni) Kohn, both of Red Wing; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Annard and Marvin; two sisters, Frances Diercks and Marjorie Liebeg.
    Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at Vasa Lutheran Church with Rev. Maureen Hagen officiating.  Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.  Memorials are preferred to the church.  Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
