Awards night goes online

Lincoln High School will be hosting its annual Awards Night on Wednesday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Awards Ceremony will be pre-recorded this year. The school will post the Awards Ceremony on its school website, lake-city.k12.mn.us, in Schoology, as well as email to parents by 7:30 p.m. on May 13.

“We would like to sincerely thank our scholarship donors that have generously increased the amount of their scholarship awards or have added additional scholarships this year,” the district said in a news release.

Four new scholarships are being offered this year.

Greater Lake City Community Foundation (GLCCF) Personal Services Scholarship in the amount of $1,500. A new Personal Services Scholarship will be offered by GLCCF to a graduating Lincoln High School senior who intends to be licensed or certified in fields such as hair care (men and women), nail care, cosmetology and makeup, massage therapy, fitness training and similar personal services professions that aim to improve the daily lives of others. The award will be in the amount of $1,500 and represents the donation of an anonymous local family.

Jon Linse Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. The Jon Linse Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Lincoln High School 1991 graduate Jon Linse who passed away on Jan. 8, 2020 of appendix cancer. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Lincoln High School senior who is continuing his/her education at a four-year college and pursuing a major in math, computers or STEM fields. Jon excelled in academics while at Lincoln High School and furthered his education at UW-Stout in Menomonie where he earned a bachelor’s degree in applied math. While in high school, Jon was active in band, math league and golf. Jon’s parents, Larry and Jane Linse, are retired Lincoln High School teachers.

Josh Leonard Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. The Josh Leonard Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Josh Leonard, a 2010 graduate of Lincoln High School who passed away in a tragic work accident on May 5, 2019. Josh was a hands on guy who could take anything with a motor and get it up and running. He was passionate about motors, especially his rat rods. He obtained his CDL license and enjoyed driving semi-truck for a living. This scholarship was formed for students like Josh who are pursuing their career in the trade industry. This scholarship is being donated by Josh’s parents, Jeff and Annette Leonard and will be awarded after the course is completed or one year into the course.

Lake City Area Childhood Cancer Awareness Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. A new scholarship will be offered by the Lake City Area Childhood Cancer Awareness (LCACCA). This award is for graduating Lincoln High School senior who is continuing his/her education at a technical, community college or a four-year college. The scholarship is designed for students who are a childhood cancer survivor, part of a family affected by childhood cancer or someone entering the medical field. The money awarded is from fundraising efforts at an annual walk on the last Saturday in September. This organization is founded by area moms and survivors. Their mission is to support families going through childhood cancer, by raising awareness and educating everyone about childhood cancer.

Service Recognition: Students who have completed 50 hours of service to the community will be recognized. This service recognition encourages Lincoln High School students in grades 9-12 to reach out and help others in the Lake City community.

School Board Scholars: School Board Scholar Awards recognize students in grades seven through nine who achieve a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.85 or higher for the school year (not cumulative), students in grade 10 who take one Advanced Placement (AP) or concurrent class and achieve a GPA of 3.75 or higher for the school year (not cumulative) and students in grades 11 of 12 who take at least two AP or concurrent classes and achieve a GPA of 3.75 or higher for the school year (not cumulative).

Socratic Challenge Scholars: Socratic Challenge Scholar Awards recognize high school seniors who have maintained a 3.25 GPA. through semester one and have taken three or more Advanced Placement or college-level courses at Lincoln High by the end of their senior year.

College Merit Scholarship: Seniors who are receiving an academic and/or athletic merit scholarship from the college they will be attending in the fall of 2020 will be recognized.

Local scholarship winners: Seniors who have received local scholarships will be recognized at awards night. Local scholarships that are being presented are:
