Lake City 150th quilt block submission deadline extended

The Lake City 150th Community Quilt submission deadline for 12-inch blocks initially was Friday, April 24. It is now extended to Monday, May 18 with an additional drop-off option due to the uncertainty of when Lake City Chamber of Commerce staff will resume working at the downtown office.

Quilters may call coordinator Lois Borner at 651-345-2460 to make arrangements for non-contact drop off at her home.

Non-quilters will be included in the community quilt by coloring six-inch squares, where four of these smaller ones will be sewn together to form a 12-inch block.

One coloring session was held Wednesday, March 11 at the High Street Assisted Living House where four residents and two staff colored blocks. In helping participants choose what to color, they were asked what they associate with Lake City or a memory which could be depicted on a square. The accompanying signed submission form has a space available for any story or reason for the coloring choice. The picture shows four blocks prior to being heat set and sewn together.

Future coloring sessions for Lake City residents have tentatively been set at Lake City Area Arts for Saturday, May 16 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Due to the uncertainty of gatherings after May 4, please watch for updates which may be necessary.

These coloring sessions are intended to be drop in, color a block and complete a submission form, and go. If only smaller gatherings are allowed, there may be limitations on numbers in the space to allow for appropriate physical distancing. The possibility for pick up of fabric squares and drop off of colored blocks has been considered but is not an option due to the amount of fraying potential of the fabric.

People may create their own design or multiple templates or examples will be provided which can be traced and colored.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
