School plans many ways to honor Class of 2020

A month-long celebration of the Class of 2020 has begun at Lincoln High School.

In an email, Principal Greg Berge informed students and parents of several ways the school district is honoring its senior class while adhering to social distancing guidelines resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some plans, like the commencement ceremony itself, are still under development.

“We are ... waiting on some more direction from the state on what we are allowed to do,” Berge wrote in the email. “Our hope is to follow all social distancing and Department of Health guidelines, limit guests, and be able to hold some form of an outdoor commencement ceremony at the football field. We will get these details out as soon as we know what we can do.”

The email enumerated several other ways the district was celebrating its graduating class.

Photos of five students per weekday will appear on the school’s Twitter feed (@LakeCityHS) and Facebook page from May 4 through May 29.

With financial help from the Lake City Education Foundation, the school is creating personalized yard signs for each senior that will be used during the month and at commencement.

The lights and scoreboard will be lit at the football field from 8:20 p.m. until 8:40 p.m. on Mondays through commencement to honor the senior class.

At some point, Berge and Activities Director Doug Vaith will participate in a challenge requiring them to run 20 20-yard sprints in recognition of the class.

The Lake City Athletic Booster Club is working on a plan to honor seniors. More information on that will be distributed to seniors when it is available.

The annual high school awards night ceremony will be pre-recorded this year and posted online by 7:30 p.m. on May 13 (see related story).

Hanisch Bakery and anonymous donors are providing seven-inch graduation cakes for all area seniors. The school district plans to distribute them to seniors at the planned class retreat on Friday, May 22. Details of the retreat will be announced later.

Fiesta Foods is doing a round-up fundraiser for the after-graduation party, which may be quite different this year because of social distancing guidelines (see related story). Customers will have the option of rounding their grocery bill up to the nearest dollar with the amount added going to help with this year’s event.
