Mayflies may make things icky, but their absence could be a bad sign

Mayflies hatched in great numbers around the area last week, blanketing the sides of buildings and other surfaces, causing a big mess, providing a feast for wildlife, and generally grossing people out.
Heavy concentrations of the aquatic invertebrates can even cause concerns for people overseeing public infrastructure.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) announced in June this year that overhead lights on the bridges over the Missississippi River in Red Wing and Wabasha would not be turned on again until the mayfly hatch concludes.
