Tiger boys tennis regular season winds down, postseason awaits

On Tuesday, May 5, the Lake City Boys Tennis team celebrated their two seniors, Cade Oliver and Patrick Kennedy, prior to hosting the Stewartville Tigers in a 2-5 loss for the home team.

Maddox Shones battled in the number one slot against Isaac Wiennmann posting a 1-6 set before coming back to win the second set 7-6(4) and ultimately dropping the third set 3-6. Cade Oliver lost his match 1-6, 0-6 while Ivan Chen was able to score a point for the Tigers with his 6-3, 7-5 win. Elliot Lukes played a tough first set 6-7(4) before dropping the second set 1-6. In doubles action Patrick Kennedy and Andrew Berger paired up in the number one position to earn a point for the Tigers in a solid 6-3, 6-3 win. Izayah Johnson and Michael Eklund lost 3-6, 3-6 and the final pairing of Corbin Fields and Everett Dinsmore dropped the first set 2-6 and then rallied to push the second set to a tie breaker 6-7 (3).

Then on Thursday, May 7, the Tigers stayed home to host the Winona Senior High team. The number one duo of Maddox Shones and Cade Oliver earned the Tiger’s single point of the match in what turned into a back and forth battle (6-1, 4-6, 11-9) with Deacon Kelner and Julian Kohner. The number two doubles pairing of Izayah Johnson and Michael Eklund lost 2-6, 3-6 and the duo of Corbin Fields and Everett Dinsmore was defeated 4-6, 3-6. In singles play Andrew Berger fell 0-6, 0-6 while Ivan Chen and Elliot Lukes both lost their matches 2-6, 3-6. Bennett Kohrs lost the first set 0-6 but was able to gain some ground for a 3-6 loss in the second set.

This week on May 11 the Tigers closed out the regular season at Kutzky Park in Rochester when they took on the Lourdes Eagles.

Thursday, May 14, marks the beginning of Section Playoffs, but at the time of publishing it was unknown where the Lake City team would be playing.

Next week the team portion of section playoffs will continue and individual rounds will start on Thursday, May 21, with Maddox Shones, Cade Oliver, Andrew Berger, Ivan Chen, Elliot Lukes and Patrick Kennedy competing at the Rochester Athletic Club.
