One step forward, one step back for 3-lane plan

Plans for improvement of Highway 61 through Lake City took a step forward and a step backward Monday night.

The City Council on a 5-2 vote agreed to send of letter of intent to the state Department of Transportation to go ahead with the project.

Monday night’s vote does not commit the city changing the highway from a four-lane to a three-lane configuration with a center turn lane or any other details.

Mary Lou Waltman and Randy Klipfel cast the two no votes.

The letter of intent simply holds about $5 million the state has earmarked for the project.
