Calvin 'Jack' Herzig Obituary
Calvin “Jack” Herzig, of Lake City passed way at Mayo Clinic Hospital - Rochester, Saint Marys Campus on Monday, August 1, 2016 at the age of 83. Jack was born on February 2, 1933 in Theilman to Herman and Elsie (Sommer) Herzig. He attended school in Theilman through the 8th grade. He married Marjorie Grage on September 1, 1956.
Jack joined the US Air Force during the Korean War on September 1, 1950 in Minneapolis. While serving his country he obtained his GED, and served in Korea for one year. Upon his return to the states he was stationed in Boise, Idaho where he worked on jets and jet engines. He received the following medals; Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Air Force National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Jack was discharged on October 20, 1953 in Boise.
Jack was employed by the City of Lake City in the Streets and Parks Department for nearly 33 years, and served as the superintendent of the department, retiring in 1998. He was a lifetime member of the Lake City VFW Post 8729.
Jack enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, NASCAR racing, and watching sports on TV, old time country music, going for long country rides in the car, and working on car and truck engines. He also enjoyed spending time working in his yard and garden. Jack enjoyed his summer vacation trips to visit relatives in Nebraska, family camping trips to northern Minnesota, Canada, and his post retirement driving trips to the Western US. He also loved his trips down to the Family Farm in Iowa.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Marjorie Herzig; children, Steven (Deb) Herzig, Diane Joan Herzig, Timothy (special friend Cindy Brown) Herzig, and Terry Sue Herzig all of Lake City; 5 grandchildren, Brandon Herzig, Holly Herzig, Melissa (FiancŽ Brady Meyer), Megan (Casey) Ferguson, and Matthew Herzig; 2 great-grandchildren, Blakeley Ferguson and Camdon Meyer; brother, James (Marilyn) Herzig of Rochester; 4 nieces and 1 nephew, and many great-nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carol (Red) and Joe, and his sister, Lorraine Anderson.
Jack donated his body to Mayo Clinic, Department of Anatomy in Rochester. No services are planned.
