Gary Smith Obituary

Gary Smith, 67, of Lake City, passed away Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus in Rochester.
    He was born March 17, 1951 in Lake City to Marlin and Betty (Carpenter) Smith.  He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1969.  He then attended Rochester Community and Technical College and later graduated from the University of Minnesota with a journalism degree.  He then moved to Lake City and worked for Di-Acro for 10 years.  On May 9, 1981 he married Val Carlson at First Lutheran Church in Lake City.  He then started working for the Lake City Post Office in 1984 where he worked for 25 years until retiring in 2009.  Gary was an avid sports fan.  He wrote for the Lake City Graphic following the Lake City wrestling team for 24 years, he also wrote about high school and Legion baseball.  Gary was a history and genealogy buff.
    He is survived by his wife, Val Smith of Lake City; sisters, Marsha (Todd) VanHatten of Hastings and Chris (Mike) Furney of Savage, Minn.; nieces and nephew, Carly and Michael Furney and Anna and Zoë Van Hatten. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marlin and Betty Smith.
    Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 20, at First Lutheran Church in Lake City with Rev. Duane Holst officiating. Friends may call on the family from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Lake City Athletic Booster Club.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
