John Marshall obituary

John Stuart Marshall, 78, of Lake City, Minn., passed away Friday, March 8 from a heart condition.
John grew up on the outskirts of St. Paul, Minn. John’s parents, father (Neil), and mother (Frances), owned a small farm with an apple orchard, where John grew up with his sister, Judy. Joining the army in 1965, he became a Special Forces medic, and served in the now famous, elite unit, B-36, in the Vietnam conflict. After his enlistment, John enjoyed family life with wife, Barbara, and sons Donovan and Christopher. True to his roots, John loved horticulture, and built a vineyard and nursery in Lake City, as well as the Lake Pepin Winery. John was a pioneer in the development of grapes that could withstand the harsh Minnesota winters.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara and son, Chris. He is survived by the love of his life, Barb McLaughlin, son Donovan (Madison, Wis.), granddaughters Lauren and Annabelle, grandson Daniel (all of Red Wing), nephew Brian  (Kelley) Nelson, nieces Barbie Wollenberg St. Sauver (St. Paul) and Jennifer Forrester (Boulder, Col.), nephews Ricky Whalen, Eric Wollenberg, and special friend Wendall Noble.
Graveside services will be held March 15, 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 8435 St. Croix Trail S., Basswood Grove, Mn 55033. A celebration of life will follow at 4 p.m. at Lake City VFW #8729, 115 N. Franklin St., Lake City, MN 55041.
