Marilyn Chant, Oct. 22, 1943 to Nov. 5, 2018.
Born in Tulare, Calif. to John Albert Oliver and Hazel Lillian O’Neal Oliver. She was the second of four children, an older brother Jack and younger twins, Phyllis and Alan. Marilyn attended school in California until the summer before her senior year of high school when her father was transferred to Mason City, Iowa. She graduated from Mason City High School. She graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. Marilyn completed postgraduate studies in ESL at Hamline University. She married Richard W. Chant and later divorced.
She was proud to have raised her children in a three-generation home with her parents in Lake City. Marilyn enjoyed reading, traveling, tending her flowers, socializing, PBS television and reading the paper on her front porch.
Marilyn was a passionate teacher and loved her students from so many parts of the world. In the past five years she has enjoyed being a host mom/grandma to Humphrey Fellows and their families from Vietnam, the Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
