Mary Barton Obituary

Mary L. Barton, 97, of Wabasha, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at St. Elizabeth’s Nursing Home in Wabasha surrounded by her loving family.  
    She was born Nov. 9, 1917 in Wabasha, to Henry and Louise (Stroot) Stamschror.  She was the last of the original pioneers of Sand Prairie.  She married Henry Barton Sept. 17, 1942 at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha.  Together they farmed on Sand Prairie, rural Wabasha all their married lives until his death on April 7, 1999.
    She was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women.  She was also a member of the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post 4086 Auxiliary and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Auxiliary.  She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, watching the birds, and cooking meals for her large family.  She especially loved having her many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren close by and spending time with her.
    Mary is survived by sons, Thomas (Barbara) Barton, Wabasha, Peter (Barbara) Barton, Ely, Bruce (Judy) Barton and Jim (Mary Ann) Barton, both of Wabasha, Bill Barton, Lake City, and Denise (Rick) Winters, Wabasha; daughters, Kate Heins, Kellogg, Sharon “Chickee” (Al) Streveler, Mary Kay (Chuck) Springer, Barbara (Pete) Quade, and Carolyn (Don) Klees, all of Wabasha, and Terese (Peter) Wallerich, Plainfield, Ill.; 31 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Janice (Clarence) Rollinger, Sunnyside, Wash.; sister-in-law, Marianne Stamschror, Wabasha; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, son, Steven, son-in-law, John Heins, brothers, Bob and Dan Stamschror and sisters, Margaret Ann Aust and Bette Harlan.
     A funeral mass will be Friday, July 31, 11 a.m. with the Reverend Fathers Robert Stamschror and Joseph LaPlante co-officiating.  Interment will be in St. Felix Cemetery.  Casket bearers are her sons, Tom, Peter, Bruce, Jim and Bill Barton and grandson, Jeff Barton.  Family and friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha on Thursday, July 30 (tonight), from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the church on Friday one hour before the mass.
