Mary Sprout Obituary

The funeral service for Mary Sprout will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake City, with Fr. John Wilmot officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Lake City.
    Mary Alice Sprout, 90, of Lake City, passed away at The Bluffs of Lake City on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, where she has resided since 2015, of Lewy Body Dementia.  
    She was born Aug. 30, 1928 in Elgin, Neb. to Joseph and Inez (Sullivan) Meis.  Mary attended school in Elgin, Neb., graduating in 1947.  Following graduation she worked for Mutual of Omaha in Omaha, Neb.  On Oct. 13, 1947 she was united in marriage to Leland C. Sprout at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin.
    Mary and Leland farmed near Elgin until 1958 when they moved to a farm in rural Lake City.  Mary raised her children at home except for a short time working at Coast-to-Coast in Lake City.  In 1975 they moved to Elgin, Neb. where she worked at the Farmers Store and also had an in-home daycare.  In 1982 they returned to Lake City where she worked in the kitchen at River Oaks Health Care Center, later at Pepin Heights Orchard, and retired from the Villa Maria in Frontenac, where she was the kitchen manager.
    Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their sporting events.  She also enjoyed playing cards and games, and gardening.  She was a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church and participated in many Bible studies.  Mary was active in the Rose Garden Club, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, many card clubs, and volunteered at the Lake City Food Shelf.  Mary never met a stranger or found a dessert she didn’t like.
    Mary is survived by her children, Dale (Dodie) Sprout of Plymouth, Diane (Daniel) Richardson of Lake City, Don (Marie) Sprout of Leesburg, Fla., Frank (Cindy) Sprout of Vining, Minn., Jim (Marcia) Sprout of Lake City,  Ed (Cate) Sprout of Lake City, Linda (Kurt) Blair of Elgin, Neb. and Jolene (Tim) Peterson of Albertville; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Meis of Arizona; brother-in-law, Alfred Metz of Georgia; sister-in-law, Lois Sprout of Elgin, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, mother- and father-in-law, her husband, one grandson, Adam Blair, one great-grandson, Taggart Sprout, and two daughters-in-law, Bev Sprout and Karen Sprout, one brother, Milton Meis, two sisters, Josephine Metz and Phyllis Peterson, three brothers-in-law, Fred Peterson, Charles Gallishaw and William Sprout, and two sisters-in-law, Mary Evelyn Gallishaw and Mary Meis.
    Friends and family may visit from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27 at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Lake City Chapel, and one hour prior to the service at the church.  Memorials are preferred to donor’s choice.
