Merlyn Kohrs Obituary

Merlyn Kohrs, 87, of Lake City, passed away peacefully Sunday April 15, 2018 at The Bluffs memory care unit in Lake City.
Merlyn was born on March 29, 1931 to Albert and Martha (Wiebusch) Kohrs in Lake City. He grew up on the family farm with his five siblings in the Belvidere area.  He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Belvidere. In 1949, he graduated from Lake City High School. He worked (with part ownership in Lake City) at Northside Mobil Station and Tomfohr Imp. in Red Wing and Goodhue.  He enlisted in the Air Force for four years stationed in Montana and England as staff sergeant.  Merlyn married the love of his life, Beverly Olson in 1950 in Lake City.
Upon discharge, he returned to Lake City and worked at Di-Acro as a machinist. Merlyn and his family moved to Pine Island in 1960 and he worked at IBM for 27 years, until he retired.  Upon retirement, Bev and Merlyn enjoyed traveling and returned to Lake City to spend their later years. Highlights of retirement included volunteering for meals on wheels and driving the county van for the vets, fishing, playing cards and “creating homemade wines” which many loved to sample. Mert was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and served on the cemetery board, and he was a member of the VFW and Lions Club in Lake City for many years.
Merlyn is survived by his children, son, Dan (Pam) Kohrs of Rochester and daughter, Vicky (Rollie) Stussy of Rochester; grandchildren, Erik and Therese Stussy of Minneapolis and Josh and Laura Stussy; great-grandsons, Liam, Quinn and Bridger of Winona, Nicole and Brandon Hanf and Ryan and Jacob; great-granddaughter, Elsie of Mazeppa; sister, Darlene (Fred) Schmidt; sisters-in-law, Vonnie Kohrs, Caroline Kohrs, Cleo Kohrs, Joan Olson and Carmen Weisz. He also cherished his many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Merlyn was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Beverly; his parents, Martha and Albert Kohrs; brothers, Reynold, Wendell (Ardis) and Virgil Kohrs, sister, Dorothy (Vern) Deden, brothers- and sisters-in-law, Don Olson, Betty and Ernie Mattson, Jean and Kenneth Wohlers and June and Iver Eggenberger.
Our “sincere and loving thank you” go out to the entire staff at The Bluffs in Lake City for the wonderful care they have provided our father and grandpa for the past four years. Your love for him has touched our hearts forever.
A memorial service will be Monday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran in Lake City with Rev. Steve Frentz officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be by Lake City VFW Post 8729 and American Legion Post 110.
