William Gunnels, Jr.

    William F. Gunnels, Jr.,  96 of Lake City and formerly of Hendersonville, N.C. passed away Friday, Jan. 18 2019 at The Bluffs of Lake City.
    William was born Sept. 16, 1922 in Johnstown, S.C. to W. (Fred) and Jessie (Mason) Gunnels. William joined the Army in 1942 serving in the 54th Signal Battalion, WWII, stationed in Europe. He was discharged in 1945. He graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked for G.E. for 39 years traveling extensively as he set up infrastructures for energy plants.
    He married his wife, Nena Crenshaw on Dec. 19, 1958 in Tupelo, Miss. They welcomed their only son, William III (Bill) on Aug. 22, 1960. They enjoyed many travels together. Taking a month long trip to Europe in 1979 to trace the steps William, Jr. took during WWII. William also was very active with the Honor Flight and helped with many reunions and events.
    He is survived by his son, William Gunnels III of Lake City and nieces, Anne Lattimore of Aiken, S.C. and Jennifer Lattimore of Lawrence, Kan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nena Gunnels, sister, Betty Lattimore, his parents, W. Fred Gunnels and Jessie Gunnels and nephew, Jeff Lattimore.
    A memorial service will be held at the Lake City Care Center Chapel Thursday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. with Rev Duane Holst officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lake City Care Center Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Hendersonville, N.C.
