Tiger boys track and field team battles through busy week of competition
The Lake City High School boys track and field team competed in a very busy and competitive week of action, taking part in the Section 1A True Team Meet in Rushford on Tuesday, May 5, followed by the Hiawatha Valley League (HVL) Conference Championships in Stewartville on Saturday, May 9.
The True Team Meet featured 22 teams and many of the top athletes in Section 1A, including several 2025 state champions. The True Team format is unique because every athlete scores points for their team, making depth and teamwork critical throughout the meet. The competition also served as an excellent opportunity for athletes to prepare for the highly competitive HVL Championships later in the week.
Lake City turned in several outstanding performances at the True Team Meet, highlighted by a championship performance in the 4x800-meter relay. The quartet of Luke Narum, Elijah Finnigan, Riley Hinck, and Conrad Seydel raced to victory in a fantastic time of 8:31.16.
The Tigers also earned a fourth-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay as Ellis Banks, Warren Stolz, Luke Narum, and Conrad Seydel posted a season-best time of 1:35.87.
Ellis Banks added another strong performance by finishing fourth in the discus with his top throw of the season at 128 feet, 2 inches. Kevin Mota also delivered a strong showing in the triple jump, placing fourth with a leap of 38 feet, 11 inches.
Lake City continued its strong momentum at the HVL Conference Championships, where the Tigers rose to the occasion against another loaded field of talented athletes.
The meet began with an outstanding performance in the 4x800-meter relay as Luke Narum, Elijah Finnigan, Riley Hinck, and Conrad Seydel clocked a blistering time of 8:21.90 to finish second overall.
In the sprint relays, Ellis Banks, Warren Stolz, Luke Narum, and Kevin Mota raced to a fourth-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:38.14.
Ellis Banks once again excelled in the discus, placing fifth with a throw of 128 feet. Nolan Marcio recorded a season-best jump of 5 feet in the high jump, while Brody Knudsen achieved a season-best mark of 15 feet, 10.5 inches in the long jump. Kevin Mota capped off an impressive week by earning fifth place in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 39 feet.
The Tigers also celebrated a major accomplishment as seven athletes earned HVL All-Conference honors in one of the toughest conference fields in the area. Those athletes included: Luke Narum, Elijah Finnigan, Riley Hinck, Conrad Seydel, Ellis Banks, Warren Stolz, and Kevin Mota.
This group of athletes displays the true definition of team. The commitment and support they show one another all season is amazing.
Lake City will wrap up its regular season schedule on Tuesday, May 12, in Pine Island.
