Appel takes Honor Flight

“I’m not completely blind, but I’m mostly blind,” said Francis Appel as he explained why he resisted applying for for an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., despite the urging of family.

If he can’t see the memorials, the 88-year-old former Marine and Korean War veteran remembers thinking, what’s the point?

His family persisted. Appel applied and was accepted. And on Sept. 16, he rose at 3:45 a.m. to head for La Crosse. From there it was onto Washington, D.C.
