Four small gardens planned through SMMPA initiative
Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA) announced an effort to create habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators in its 18 member communities. Loss of habitat has resulted in an estimated 90 percent reduction in the eastern U.S. population of the iconic butterfly.
Lake City will get not one but four small milkweed gardens this summer to help the struggling monarch butterfly population.
The gardens are being installed with the support of the city’s electric energy supplier.
