History Matters Essay Contest - First Place Winner

Time, from a theoretical physics point of view, is measured as lower levels of entropy (dis-order in the universe) moving to levels of higher entropy. In other terms, the universe is observed as being more “organized” in the past than it is today. What does this mean for you or me? It means that change is the driving force for the phenomena we call time. This change of lower to higher entropy is how we measure time. For as long as the universe is in change there will be time. The past cannot be changed. Nor can our future be altered. Despite this, we do have an indirect way to exert a modicum of control over the past. Or more aptly put, the past has a modicum of control over us. What we do now directly impacts how the past, or history, of ourselves, turns out. Even simple choices, like deciding to get milk this morning or not, will impact tomorrow morning when I do or don’t have milk for my cereal. History matters because how we act and treat each other now will directly hinder or help the future. It is our responsibility, as historic figures of tomorrow, to give the action of history the respect it deserves. History is a living and breathing thing that needs to be treated properly. History has many examples of how it reached from the past to impact the “now”. Looking at a wide scope of history from the French Revolution to WWII and American civil rights movements, they all were instances where the history of an era impacted major events of the “now”. Countless momentous events are still impacting the world today. The French Revolution, for example, had many variables and events causing it but, we’re going to focus on one in particular.
