History Matters Essay Contest - Second Place Winner

Today, I believe we live in a society focused on the now, on the present. We’re constantly updating ourselves on the world around us, through social media and the news. With all of this stimulus, it can seem like the world is moving at a blazing speed towards the future, to the unknown. In many aspects, it is. Breaking news headlines one week, the next, nothing more than a memory. In this fast paced world, I think it’s important to slow down, and take in the scenery. One of the ways one could do this is by looking to the past. By looking at history, you can see the intricacies of the human condition, learn how the world as we know it, today, came to be, and be taught lessons from history to help better our future.
