Local Lore: Sarah the Lamplighter

Did you know that at one time Lake City had a lamplighter? Sarah Ann Maire Kimm (1859-1937) was known as “Sarah, the Lamplighter,” for much of her life. She was 41 years old when she lit the first navigation lamps on the government pier in May of 1900, after taking over for John McMillen, who was forced to quit due to lameness. Mrs. Kimm continued to faithfully carry out this task until her death in 1937, and in doing so, she became an icon to the area known by almost every resident.
