Mill falcons get bands, names

A Lake City couple had a scary morning May 28 when a group of intruders chased them away with brooms and kidnapped their children.

But a scary hour for parents and children is part of a decades-long effort that has helped bring the species back from the brink of extinction.

For years, peregrine falcons have made their home in a nesting box high atop Ardent Mills’ Lake City mill. It’s a collaboration between the company and the Raptor Resource Project, a non-profit based in Decorah, Iowa, that focuses on raptor conservation.
