Correction: Production and job cuts coming to Federal-Mogul by end of 2020

The Tenneco plant, formerly known as Federal-Mogul, in Lake City has announced that it will end the production of heavy duty diesel cylinder liners in the plant by the end of 2020.

“This was a difficult business decision but one that was necessary to help return the plant to profitability,” the company said in a news release.

The move includes job cuts expected to number between 60 and 95. No reduction is expected in the next few months.

The company will continue producing cylinder liners for its automotive business in Lake City.

“For now, it is business as usual with no immediate action taking place,” the company said.

The company didn’t respond to a request for the number of employees currently working at the plant.

The local boilermakers union, which represents employees at the plant, didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Tenneco completed its acquisition of Federal-Mogul on Oct. 1 of last year.

Lake City Mayor Mark Nichols shared some perspective on the news both as mayor and someone who works in economics and sector analysis.

“It’s obviously disappointing and I can’t imagine the stress that the employees are feeling,” he said. “But I do know we have a manufacturing base that will absorb some of these jobs. All companies have attrition each year and this will help in job replacement. However, typically it’s at lower wages.

“So it is a net negative, but I’m thankful that overall we have a resilient manufacturing service employer base.”
