Lake City closes city buildings to public

The City of Lake City announced Tuesday afternoon that all city buildings would be closed to the public until further notice beginning Thursday, March 19.

“This decision is in line with the Minnesota Department of health and both Goodhue and Wabasha County recommendations to curb the spread of COVID-19,” the city said in a news release. “We care about our residents and city staff is here to help answer questions and support you during this time.”

People can contact city hall at 651-345-5383, public works at 651-345-4711 and public safety at its non-emergency number, 651-345-3344.

In an interview Tuesday, City Administrator Rob Keehn said the city’s goal is to maintain essential services, such as fire, police, ambulance, sewer, water, and electricity.

“Those are the areas we want to make sure we have full coverage,” he said.

He said that the status of meetings of city commissions was yet to be determined. Meetings where the city has to conduct legal business will take place, he said.

One of those meetings is a special meeting March 23 to consider a purchase agreement for city farmland in Lake Township.

City staff will be following social distancing guidelines with each other and the public whenever possible, he said, and he encouraged the public to do the same.

“From a city standpoint what we want to focus on the most is how we take care of our neighbors by not exposing them,” he said. “Stay in touch with people you need to stay in touch with, but do it by phone.”
