Electricity is likely to be a little bit cheaper in Lake City in 2019.
Wholesale rates from Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA), where Lake City Public Utilities purchases power to serve the city, are decreasing by 4 percent.
As a result, the city’s utility board recommended a 2 percent rate reduction. On Nov. 12, the City Council waived a first reading on an ordinance to enact the recommendation.
City Public Works Director Scott Jensen told the council that SMMPA reduced its rates in accordance with its reserve policy.
