Meticulous artist creates scene for Christmas

At 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, a barefoot Michael Augustin, dressed in black from head to ankle, was on his knees sprinkling sand on a blanket in the parish hall of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church.
He estimates he’ll spend between 40 and 60 hours creating a six-by-eight-foot sand painting of the immaculate conception, the moment the biblical Virgin Mary became pregnant with Jesus Christ.
