This spring, Lake City Public Schools was one of five recipients of a planning assistance grant as part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) Safe Routes to School Program.
Safe Routes to School is an international program designed to promote walking and biking to school as a way to increase student physical activity, increase safety, and promote health.
According to MnDOT, in 1969, 48 percent of students walked or biked to school. By 2019 that percentage had fallen to just 13 percent.
