Syl Thiel dies at age 93

A World War II veteran, former city councilman, businessman and bowling pioneer, Syl Thiel, died Tuesday at his home. He was 93.

Airman Thiel served in Holland during the Normandy Invasion.

He was a member of the Lake City City Council for nine years in the 1990s.

He and his wife Phyllis owned and operated several businesses in Lake City over the years.

But Syl’s name is most prominently dotted through the history of bowling in America.
