Donald Palmer Obituary

    Donald William Palmer, 97, of Lake City, passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018 at his home.          He was born on Feb. 8, 1921 to Oscar and Marie (Bremer) Palmer in Lake City.  He attended rural schools in Lake City and the University of Minnesota Agricultural School in Minneapolis.  He married Lois Klenke on June 2, 1949 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake City.  They farmed in Mt. Pleasant Township until 1979 when they moved to Lake City.  
    Donald served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945 and served in North Africa, the Middle East, and Italy.  He was part of the Freedom Flight in 2012 to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
    Donald was a member of the American Legion, a lifetime member of the VFW, and was a board member of the DHIA and AI Breeding.  He loved his farming, playing cards, dancing, antiquing, and spending time with his family.  He also loved telling stories of his life.
    He is survived by his four daughters, Patricia Kidd of West Salem, Wis., Karen (Matthew) Robinson of Athens, Ala., Mary (Daniel) Roper of Red Wing and Lynne (Gary) Watson of Goodhue; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his parents, Oscar and Marie Palmer; two daughters, Kay Lynn (1953) and Julie Palmer (1978).
    Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Frentz officiating.  Burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery with military honors provided by Lake City VFW Post 8729 and American Legion Post 110.  Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.  Memorials are preferred to the Freedom Honor Flight.  Online memorials can be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
