75 years since D-Day
The 75th anniversary of the Allied invasion that liberated Europe during World War II will be observed Thursday June 6, 2019 in Normandy, France.
The invasion reversed the course of the war and broke the Nazi grip on France. D-Day was code-named “Operation Overlord” and was the largest amphibious invasion in history, with more than 4,000 ships, 11,000 warplanes and 175,000 Allied troops landing on five Normandy beaches. Over 4,400 Allied troops died on June 6, 1944 and many remain yet today, buried in French cemeteries.
