Fiedler: We can care for others while protecting the fragile

Editor’s note: The following column originated as a Facebook post. It has been edited slightly.

Social distancing is not something that public health officials are asking you to do because we want you to stop having fun, or to stop being neighborly. We are asking you to do social distancing because it’s what science says works in slowing disease spread.

We are trying to protect those who are medically fragile. We are trying to make sure there are enough hospital beds and nurses and doctors to take care of the those who become the sickest.

Answering the most common question I see on Facebook:

It is ok to check in on your neighbors and friends by phone. If someone needs some essential items from the store and you can go get it for them, please do. Just drop it off at the front door and go on your way knowing you did what you could to help and to keep them safe.

What can you do: Go for a walk outside. Use technology to stay connected with those you can’t personally see as often as you would like. Wash your hands and stay home if you are sick.

Side note: The fun things many of you are doing at home with your families is some pretty cool stuff. Keep sharing those great ideas. It’s hard for families to be out of their normal routine. Take care of yourself and allow some time to figure out what is going to work for you and your family.

Finally: Thank you to those who have reached out to me personally during this challenging time. I am so proud of the people I work alongside. We have an amazing collaboration with so many community partners and I feel so lucky to be able to count them as not only work partners but friends.

Stay well, stay positive and do your part.
