Third time charmed: Ice boaters return

Ice boats were back on Lake Pepin for a third straight weekend, this time for the Northwest Regatta.

This time the competition drew the participation of one of Lake City’s most prominent residents, Mayor Mark Nichols.

“I raced on Saturday. It was on my bucket list,” he wrote. “I have had an old DN boat for 10 years and just this fall bought a new used boat, and the hints and tips from these experience racers were very helpful.”

Nichols has more experience sailing and racing on thawed ice. But he wasn’t completely out of his depth.
