Rental property utility change okayed

Landlords in Lake City will be responsible for utility payments at their rental properties beginning Jan. 1, 2020.

The City Council approved the change in a 5-0 vote at its Sept. 10 meeting.

City staff had sought the change as a way to prevent the loss of about $15,000 per year in uncollectable utility fees.

Speaking as a citizen from the podium, Councilmember Greg Schreck, who owns rental properties, said the change would make rental housing more expensive in an already expensive rental market.
