Halvorson: Childhood illnesses of yesteryear
Mom had been working for weeks sewing costumes for the big school production; four of the six of us had parts.
Excitement was growing. In walked my youngest sister covered with red spots. Next thing there was a sign on the front door: Quarantine!
No one was allowed to enter or leave. This was a sign of the times. There were no vaccines for childhood diseases. With six kids in the house we managed to catch whatever was going around, measles, chicken pox, mumps, scarlet fever, you name it – sooner or later one of us would catch it.
