Murmuration and a glimpse into the past

I came across another unfamiliar word this week that I would like to share: murmuration. It pertains to soft sounds and certain birds especially starlings who form huge flocks containing thousands of birds (in southwest Denmark, often over a million.) This mass of birds will generally gather and begin swooping, twisting, coming apart and then back together­­—hopefully not over your newly washed car. They can reach speeds of 40- 50 mph, then just before dusk, they suddenly drop down into their overnight roost.
